Some Frequently Asked Questions

cast iron and wrought iron What is the difference between cast iron, wrought iron and wrought steel? In contemporary usage, wrought iron refers to steel which is worked, shaped or fabricated by hand, wrought iron also is a term used to refer to a specific alloy of iron that was replaced by modern steel. Wrought metal is formed by heating and beating the metal. Wrought iron is no longer in wide production, and most items that are termed "wrought iron" are actually mild steel. Cast Iron, although strong is also very brittle, which can lead to fractures and a weakened structure. We use quality steel described as "wrought iron" in accordance with common description with almost all other similar manufacturers.

Measuring For Your Gate or Railings

Where we create a product to your measurements you need to take special care to ensure that all of your measurements are accurate. We will confirm information that you give to us back to you via a confirmation of order or a quotation. Please feel free to contact us if you are having any issues with measuring or if there is anything you do not understand about the instructions and we will do our best to help.

Measuring for your gate

how to measure a gate

A. Measuring the width:

The measurements should be for the gap between your posts, not the actual gate or railing size. You do not need to make any allowances for the fittings, we will make all the calculations for you. As you will see from the diagrams we suggest that you measure from inside of one post to the inside of the other. Please also allow for any coping stones or similar post tops/finishes, these need to be taken in to account when giving overall measurements so we can design around them.

B.Choosing the height:

When measuring the height do so from the steepest part of the gap, you should allow a 50mm ground clearance on all gates and railings and your measurements supplied to us should be the overall height of the gate including railheads or other decorative finishers.

Measuring for your Pathway Gate or Arched Gate

A. Measuring the width:

garden gates

As you will see from the diagram the measurement should be for the distance between your posts, not the actual gate size. You do not need to make any allowances for the fittings, we will make all the calculations for you. Please also allow for any coping stones or similar post tops/finishes, these need to be taken in to account when giving overall measurements so we can design around them.

B + C.Measuring the arch

When measuring for an arched gate, it is important to measure the height to the top of the arch in the middle, as well as the point where the arch begins.

Measuring for your Wall Panel Railings

wrought iron railings

We recommend that if you have brick pillars or posts, within which you wish the railing to fit, that the railing does not rise above any coping stones or the top of the pillars (as indicted in diagram by C.) or posts at the sides simply for aesthetic reasons. We also advise that you take the width measurements (B.)at both the top and bottom of your pillars to ensure the squareness of the opening, similarly measure both sides of the opening to allow for gradient changes etc (A.). We recommend for aesthetic purposes that you leave a gap at the bottom of the railing of 40mm (D.), please confirm this is either included or not in the measurements you supply.
